As usual, we ended up at Donnelly's Irish Pub. I never quite understood the draw - Donnelly's is a classic Irish pub - they serve freshly popped popcorn and have a pretty traditional menu. Then I tried the Reuben. Oh. Dear. God. Donnelly's makes its own slow-cooked corn beef brisket, which is sliced to order. The sandwich is served with swiss cheese and kraut on freshly toasted rye bread. They give you a small container of 1000 Island dressing for dipping or spreading. The whole shebang is served with fries and a crisp pickle. I often think that the sign of a good sandwich is that the pickle is nice, cool and crisp. True to this benchmark, the Donnelly's Reuben is truly amazing. I pretty much inhaled the whole thing before getting halfway through my Guiness. The meat was flavorful and juicy, the kraut and swiss went perfectly with the slightly salty meat, and the rye gave it just the right amount of crunch. There are other items on the menu that are tempting. The fish & chips are quite good, as are the chicken strips. The beef stew served over mashed potatoes looks heavenly. Of course, every time I go there I will have a hard time not ordering the best Reuben I have ever had. With a good beer to wash it all down, how can you go wrong? Note: Donnelly's also has a fairly extensive whiskey menu, from a cheap Jameson to a 30 yr Glenfiddich.

Donnelly's was one of the first places I came to in Iowa City. It's a place that I still go to regularly for one reason (amongst a number of others including the friendly wait staff and its close proximity to my office on campus): their reuben. They make other bar food, all of which is very good. They have large wings and well-executed cheeseburgers (I'd prefer order to cook, but they do hit the spot) but they don't hold a candle to their reuben. The reuben here is the best on in Iowa City. No question. NONE. It actually says this on the menu. It's truth in advertising. The beef is delicious, goes well with the 1000 island, and is topped with quality kraut. It's an all-around excellent enterprise. It's also rarely soggy, which is impressive. My body goes into reuben withdrawal from time to time. I will be walking around and think I've got to go to donnelly's and eat a reuben. That reuben and the generally chill vibe makes Donnelly's somewhere that I actually like to go for lunch or a dinner with some friends.

Not the great atmosphere in town, but quite possibly the best bar food. Get the onion rings!

I have eaten here exactly once, so the two star rating could easily change if I decide to give it another shot. I will start with the positives: it had beer, which the server kept refilled at a pretty reasonable clip. The negatives: the kitchen was SLOW. I got the deviled eggs to start with, which, while not terrible, weren't very good either and took twenty minutes to come out. I'm pretty sure they had been premade and stuck in a fridge, so I'm not sure what the hold up was there. I also got the veggie burger (which was a Boca Burger or some such grocerystore-freezer variety) that the cook decided to forget about on the grill far too long. I wouldn't have cared too much if the place had been slammed, but at least a quarter of the seats were empty. Needless to say, I won't beat down a path to Donnelly's any time soon

Sometimes I just need a Guinness at the right temperature and served in a proper pint glass. While I feel like this is hardly an outlandish request, Donnelly has been the only place to pull it off consistently complete with the clover leaf in the foam. The menu is sparse, but good quality; What is served is excellent quality from the deviled eggs and sweet potato fries to the sliders. On most Wednesdays they have the special of half a Reuben sandwich with Irish Stew. It makes me long for the old country and moreover wish I were Irish. In the later hours, bar crawls tend to stop by and sardine-pack the place, luckily crowds never stay long and soon all order is restored, so wait it out; The wait staff and bartenders kick ass and will chat with you and your party during slow times. This is a place where good nights happen!

My husband ordered the double cheeseburger and although he said it was good, he was disappointed because the burgers were too well done, and said the cole slaw was just okay. I had the pulled pork and it was delish! The sweet potato fries were awesome! Sliced thin and cooked crispy. A real treat was the Lightnin' Hopkins CD playing during our meal.

Best bar food in Iowa City hands down. Irish stew, sweet potato fries, buffalo chicken salad all excellent. The fried chicken you get with the sandwiches and the buffalo chicken salad is battered and fried to order, not a frozen patty. The prices are also lower than almost any other bar in town. The menu is small and everything I've had so far has been really good. Staff is also one of the best in town. Most servers are very friendly, nice and competent. They generally have nice taste in music too. Not very authentically Irish, but a great all-around bar.

I have been to Donnelly's several times now. The first few times, I must admit, wasn't a fan. The sweet potato fries and the Guinness were great, but the service was lacking (at best), and the burgers were average. The last few times have been a different story all together. The food has improved immensely, some new menu items like the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, I got it and it was HUGE and TASTY. They boast the Reuben to be the "best in town", and they may be right. Service is still a little shaky from time to time, but all in all, better than it used to be. For an "Irish" pub, it passes, definitely worth checking out for the drink specials and the happy hour as well.
